When someone searches “plumber near me” or “house cleaning in Tampa”, the first thing they see isn’t websites: it’s the map with three businesses. You earn that spot with a well-built Google Business Profile, and it’s free.
1. Create or claim your profile
Go to business.google.com with a Google account and search for your business name. If it already shows up (Google sometimes creates it automatically), claim it. If not, create it from scratch.
2. Pick the right primary category
It’s one of the factors that matters most. Use the category that describes exactly what you do: “House cleaning service” beats “Company”. You can add secondary categories for your other services afterwards.
3. Address or service area
- If customers come to you, enter your address.
- If you go to customers (cleaning, construction, technicians), set it up as a service-area business and list the cities you cover. That way your home address stays hidden.
4. Verify your business
Google will ask you to verify it by video, phone, text or email, depending on the case. Without verification your profile won’t show properly on Maps. Don’t skip this step.
5. Complete the whole profile
The more complete it is, the more trust it earns from Google and from customers:
- Phone number and website (link it; it helps both).
- Business hours, including holidays.
- A list of services with a short description each.
- A business description that mentions your services and cities, written naturally.
6. Upload real photos
Photos of your work, your team, your vehicle or your location. Profiles with real photos get more clicks than ones with just a logo. Add new photos every month.
7. Get reviews (and reply to them)
Reviews are key to climbing the map. Ask every happy customer using the direct review link Google Business gives you. Reply to every review, including negative ones, politely and quickly. If you serve both English and Spanish speakers, getting reviews in both languages is a plus.
8. Post every week
Google Business lets you post updates, offers and recent work. One post a week tells Google your business is active.
9. Keep your details identical everywhere
Your name, phone number and address must be exactly the same on Google, your website, Facebook, Instagram and directories like Yelp or Bing. Inconsistencies confuse Google and cost you rankings.
The other half: your website
Google Maps and your website work together: the profile puts you on the map and the website convinces customers to reach out. If you don’t have a website yet, or yours doesn’t convert, check our web design plans or request a free audit of your current site.
